R22 Refrigerant Phase Out, what is it, and what do you need to know?

R22 refrigerant or freon, also known as its technical name, chlorodifluoromethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant commonly used in air conditioning systems. However, R22 has been found to contribute to ozone depletion and has a high global warming potential. As a result, its production and importation have been phased out in many countries, including the United States, meaning equipment for this type freon is not made any more.
